Web 2.0 is not a new and second internet but rather it is a different way of looking at the internet; one that, in my opinion, makes the whole experience far more personal. Web 2.0 looks at the internet as a social media which doesn't exclude business, it actually enhances it bringing the social media created on the internet and business together.
The main issue for most marketers with Web 2.0 is that in order to use it successfully, it actually requires marketers to create useful content that readers can either relate to or that answers their questions, rather then the traditional advertisements. It requires marketers to have an opinion or something to say about something. It also requires that we think enough of ourselves to share that opinion with others.
At the beginning of any new way to look at something, there are those who are leading the pack and understand the philosophy behind the new perspective. These are the people that push the concept into place and explain it to everyone else. Seth Godin was one of those individuals writing many books on the different aspects of social media and the role it plays in marketing.
A few years ago, Godin launched one of the most brilliant internet based social media sites ever concieved of. Squidoo is a free and brilliant use of a marketers time. It works best in conjuction with other endeavors - super charging all of your efforts.
An explanation of the philosophy is best offered by the creator himself in the form of a short ebook he had created to support the launch of Squidoo. Like all of Godin's stuff, this little ebook is rich in it's explanation of how the internet actually works from the marketer's point of view. I highly recommend that you take the hour it might take to read it. At the very least you will get a far better sense of how consumers use the internet.
